چکیده

Accurate knowledge of the velocity dispersion of Lamb modes is important for ultrasonic nondestructive evaluation methods used in detecting and locating flaws in thin plates and in determining their elastic stiffness coefficients. Lamb mode dispersion is also important in the acoustic emission technique for accurately triangulating the location of emissions in thin plates. In this research, the ability to characterize Lamb mode dispersion through a time-frequency analysis (the pseudo-Wigner-Ville distribution) was demonstrated. A major advantage of time-frequency methods is the ability to analyze acoustic signals containing multiple propagation modes, which overlap and superimpose in the time domain signal. By combining time-frequency analysis with a broadband acoustic excitation source, the dispersion of multiple Lamb modes over a wide frequency range can be determined from as little as a single measurement. In addition, the technique provides a direct measurement of the group velocity dispersion. The technique was first demonstrated in the analysis of a simulated waveform in an aluminum plate in which the Lamb mode dispersion was well known. Portions of the dispersion curves of the A0, A1, S0, and S2 Lamb modes were obtained from this one waveform. The technique was also applied for the analysis of experimental waveforms from a unidirectional graphite/epoxy composite plate. Measurements were made both along and perpendicular to the fiber direction. In this case, the signals contained only the lowest order symmetric and antisymmetric modes. A least squares fit of the results from several source to detector distances was used. Theoretical dispersion curves were calculated and are shown to be in good agreement with experimental results.

Lamb Wave Dispersion Compensation in Piezoelectric Wafer Active Sensor Phased-Array Applications

Lamb-wave testing for structural health monitoring is complicated by the dispersion nature of the wave modes. The dispersion effect will result in a propagated wave with longer time duration, deformed envelop shape as compared to its excitation counterpart, and hard to be interpreted. This paper first reviews the dispersion compensation and removal algorithms. Second, it compares these two meth...

Model-based analysis of dispersion curves using chirplets.

Time-frequency representations, like the spectrogram or the scalogram, are widely used to characterize dispersive waves. The resulting energy distributions, however, suffer from the uncertainty principle, which complicates the allocation of energy to individual propagation modes (especially when the dispersion curves of these modes are close to each other in the time-frequency domain). This res...

Dispersion Compensation and Mode Separation of Lamb Waves Using Two-component Signals of Laser Interferometer

Due to the problems of dispersion and multi-modes overlap for ultrasonic Lamb wave propagation, it is difficult to use it in many fields, such as long-range inspection. After ultrasonic Lamb waves are generated by a broadband ultrasonic pulse, these problems make the wave packets to spread out and various modes overlap in both time and space domain as they propagate through a plate or pipe. It ...

Lamb Waves Time-reversal Method using Frequency Tuning Technique for Structural Health Monitoring

Lamb wave time reversal method is a new and tempting baseline-free damage detection technique for structural health monitoring. With this method, certain types of damage can be detected without baseline data. However, the application of this method to thin-wall structures is complicated by the existence of at least two Lamb wave modes at any given frequency, and by the dispersion nature of the ...

Time-frequency representation of Lamb waves using the reassigned spectrogram

This brief note reports on a study that applies the reassigned spectrogram (the reassigned energy density spectrum of the short-time Fourier transform [STFT]) to develop the dispersion curves for multimode Lamb waves propagating in an aluminum plate. The proposed procedure first uses the spectrogram to operate on a single, laser-generated and detected waveform to develop the dispersion relation...
